Class Requirements:

Completion of all paperwork
Must be 17 years old
Valid Driver’s License or in the process of applying for one
Eligible applicants will attend a series of interviews
Students need to be able to attend classes from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM
We will notify students if accepted to the Auted program in writing.

Basic Automotive Maintenance and Educational Training Program

This 45-hours course provides the fundamental knowledge, experience, and know-how for maintaining an automobile. The course is basic and designed for a student with little or no knowledge of an automobile’s operation. The intent of the course is to help the student determine if she/he wants to pursue Automotive Service as a career.


  1. Historical Background
    The student will be able to:

    1. Explain major events that have influence the development of the automobile
    2. Describe the basic systems that make up an automobile
    3. Name the major components and functions of the automobile
    4. Describe how cars work
  2. Common Hand Tools and Shop Equipment
    The student will be able to:

    1. Recognize some of the hand tools used in auto repair
    2. Recognize some of the common shop equipment and their purpose
    3. Describe the different sources for service information that are available to technicians
    4. Describe the proper use of common hand tools
    5. Identify types of service manuals
    6. Be familiar with basic computer operation
  3. Preventative Maintenance and Basic Services
    The student will be able to:

    1. Fluids
      1. Identify different types of fluids used in the automobile
      2. Perform basic fluid level checks and analyze the fluids condition
    2. Electrical System
      1. Define electricity in terms of voltage, current, and resistance
      2. Clean and test a battery safely and explain its performance rating
      3. Test a starter and alternator
      4. Identify the importance of fuses in the electrical system
    3. Lubrication System
      1. Define the purpose of engine oil and oil filters
      2. Discuss the importance of oil filters
      3. Change the oil and filter of a vehicle
      4. Explain the purpose of the fuel system
      5. Remove and replace the air filter and fuel filter
      6. Describe the parts of the fuel system
    4. Cooling System
      1. Identify the purpose of the cooling system
      2. Describe the cooling systems components
      3. Explain how coolant flows in the engine
      4. Test and service the coolant system

      Automotive Technician Prep

    5. Ignition System
      1. Define the purpose of the ignition system
      2. Define and discuss the importance of the ignition system components
      3. Test and perform basic service procedures on the ignition system
    6. Suspension, Steering and Tires
      1. Define the purpose and function of the suspension system
      2. Define the purpose and function of the steering system
      3. Inspect suspension and steering components
      4. Discuss the importance of tires, inspect and rotate the them
    7. Braking System
      1. Define the purpose and principles of the braking system
      2. Identify the different types of brakes and their components
      3. Discuss the advantages of antilock brakes
      4. Explain how a parking brake works
      5. Safely perform basic inspections on the braking system
    8. Drivetrain
      1. Define the purpose of the drivetrain
      2. Identify drivetrain components
      3. Identify and describe different drivetrain components
      4. Inspect drivetrain systems
    9. Exhaust and Emission System
      1. Define the purpose of the exhaust and emission system
      2. Identify and explain the components in an exhaust and emission system
    10. Alternative Fuels
      1. Identify differences in automotive design depending on the fuel source
      2. Compare petrol based and bio-based fuels
      3. Calculate the payback period on an alternative fueled vehicle
    11. Common Automobile Problems
      1. Identify common automobile problems
      2. Analyze basic automobile problems and decide about a solution
      3. Replace a headlight
      4. Jump-start a vehicle safely
